Week #755

The week started off well. For the school survey projects, we’re going back over the code-base and both updating the libraries, but also the CSS. It’s been a long time since we touched it, so bring both up to modern standards is good. Along the way, we’ve switched the fonts, got dark mode working and cleaned-up some color choices. This week we continues with the CSS for the WordPress theme and charts.

We also got a new “smart” water meter installed (sort of). They came first time Monday morning, turned off the water and power, then after turning it back on again left. We had a look since they didn’t say goodbye and nothing is plugged in and only 2 of the 3 meters have been switched… we’re assuming they’re coming back, but who knows when!

The Australian concreters, always have a few more bugs and requests, so we spent some time this week also ironing things out so they can switch over to using the web app for planning projects and inventory.

On Sunday night, we had a short meeting with Australia to plan next steps and sync about the current status.

Week #756

Monday started as a public holiday in Iceland. It was Frídagur verslunarmanna (Commerce Day). Originally designed to give shopkeepers a day off, it has evolved into the busiest travel weekend in Iceland.

On Tuesday we finalized all the tasks and bugs for the Australian Concreters. They’ll use the system for a bit, then we’ll revamp the inventory portion. They also bought a mixing truck, so we’re back to tracking hours AND equipment. We end-up treating the equipment like labour, we just don’t send the equipment’s hours to generate pay slips. On Wednesday and Thursday we got a few more items. Luckily, we’re billing hourly, so while this takes time away from other projects, we are getting paid.

We’ve also been getting back into the SwiftUI prototypes. Connecting the Apple TV with an iPhone/iPad to use the camera and an Apple Watch to gather more sensor data in real-time. We’ve got all the pieces in place, but it needs both some refactoring. The client is eager to move faster on the project, but there are only so many hours in the day and the fall gets busy for us with school surveys. The major issues is that tvOS and watchOS both support sub-sets of useful networking libraries making it really hard to connect to each other easily.

On Thursday, we went through the task list with the school survey team and cleaned-up most all of our outstanding issues before we start in September. There will always be a few hiccups and things that need improving, re-styling, text changes or bugs to fix, but we’re in a good shape and happy with the progress.

Bric-à-brac

The newest Mario Kart game for the Switch 2 keeps with the tradition of in-game brands. This video breaks down many of the classic designs from the last few releases and categorizes them into similar groupings.

We’ve also started to go down the Wii rabbit hole. Over the summer we got the Wii out of storage and have been playing a few classic games. More on that later.
