Just In Time Deliveries

The US company Zipline is a drone-based delivery service. They currently supply blood to remote hospitals across Rwanda, Ghana and now parts of the Japanese islands. Centralizing the distribution reduces waste and creates a greener solution.

In a recent NHK interview, (https://www3.nhk.or.jp/nhkworld/en/tv/directtalk/20220615/2058914/) Zipline CEO Keller Rinaudo talked about how the technology is only sci-fi, sexy, and exciting for about the first 7 days. Then by day 8, it is no longer novel and must be dependable. When that happens, you are an important part of their supply chain, especiially in Zipline's case delivering life-saving medical supplies.

Logistics doesn't have a reputation for being very interesting to most people, but has some of the greatest impacts on our lives.

Whisky War

From 1973 to 2022, Canada and Denmark were in a land dispute over a small, barren island in the strait between northern Canada and Greenland known as Hans Island. In turn, each counttry planted a flag and left a welcoming bottle of Canadian Whiskey or Danish Cognac for the other as they each "retook" the island multiple times.

On June 10, 2022, the Canadian and Danish governments settled on a border to split the island, giving Canada its first land border with the EU.

Defenestrations of Prague

Defenestrate (the French translation for being thrown "out of the window") is believed to have first been used in written English describing an incident in Prague in 1618 when two regents and their secretary were defenestrated.

Even though this is the first documented use of the English term, it happened at least twice before. This was Prague's third defenestration incident, and it in part, sparked the Thirty Years' War.

Tetris blocks have names

Did you know that each of the seven different types of block shapes in Tetris have names?

Someone dug out the original instruction manual from over 33 years ago and there they were all this time: Orange Ricky, Blue Ricky, Hero, Teewee, Cleveland Z, Rhode Island Z and Smashboy.
